Brad’s Spin Tool (BST), by Brad Campbell, is one of three tools developers can use to develop firmware for the Parallax Propeller microcontroller. The other tools are the Propeller Tool and PropellerIDE , both of which were developed by Parallax Inc, the creators of the Propeller microcontroller.
The Propeller Tool is the original tool for developing firmware (Spin or C) on Windows and is the IDE most widely used by Parallax Propeller developers. The PropellerIDE was created years later in order to allow cross-platform development using Windows, Mac, Linux, or the Raspberry Pi.
Although the Propeller Tool and PropellerIDE can be used to write code for Parallax Propeller microcontroller, they are not preferred over Brad’s Spin Tool. This is because both tools lack features that are essential for developing real world projects while Brad’s Spin Tool does not. Most notably, Brad’s Spin Tool allows developers to:
- Create Projects, customize Project Settings, and restore Projects
- Include infinitely many search paths for the compiler to find Spin objects
- Minify code at compile time by removing unused methods and folding constants and unary pairs
- Use Linux, Mac, or Windows to write code
While the previous features should convince you that Brad’s Spin Tool is the best tool for writing code for the Parallax Propeller microcontroller, it only highlights the most important differences. To see a comprehensive comparison of these tools, see Brad’s Spin Tool vs Propeller Tool vs PropellerIDE.
